extreme short term memory loss, alcohol or dementia?

User Profile
My friend has extreme short term memory loss and it is getting worse. She also repeats herself a lot about what she is doing or will do. She abused alcohol for about 40 years. Can this be a result of it or is this an early stage of dementia?

Dementia or any other neurological disorder affecting the memory of a individual cannot be assessed or diagnosed with the limited history here. A complete medical history, a physical and neurological examination would be highly essential.

undiagnosed blunt trauma to the head, anxiety disorders, depression or other psychiatric disorders , also need to be ruled out before considering it to be due to dementia.

Hence it would be recommended to consult a neurologist for a proper medical opinion.
