exercise between ovulation & period causes extreme pain!

User Profile
I've been having an issue for 3 yrs & can't find anything about it online. When I have a fairly sudden increase in heart rate anytime btwn ovulation & my period, w/in @5 mins I get a SEVERE cramp. I feel like I need 2 go 2 the bathroom, I start dripping w/sweat, get nauseous & all I can do is lie on the floor moaning & praying 2 die. Within @15 mins, it starts 2 subside in waves & it's all over w/in @35 mins. I'm left drenched in sweat & exhausted.

At first, if I raised my HR slowly enough I could avoid it, but that's gotten harder 2 do. If I walk my dog & hit a hill 2 early, I'll be dying when I get home. The pain's lower than usual monthly cramps.

When it started, I went 2 my gyn, who didn't know anything & said I looked fine. But it's gotten steadily worse. Now I'm afraid 2 exercise at all. It also happens if I push 2 hard when I go 2 the bathroom (which I do a lot b/c I have chronic constipation).

It really interferes w/my life now & I know it can't be normal. Please help!

Hi, and thanks for your query on eHealth forum!

Severe pain before periods or during that time can be due to ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids. Many women suffer from it. It can be primary or secondary. Secondary dysmenorrhea has an underlying disease, disorder, or structural abnormality either within or outside the uterus. Primary dysmenorrhea is diagnosed when none of these are detected. Dysmenorrhea can exist with excessively heavy blood loss, known as menorrhagia.

There are several treatments available for it depending on the type of cramping. There are two kinds of cramping. Spasmodic cramping is caused by chemicals called prostaglandins. Generally your gynecologist will prescribe either contraceptive pills or some other tablets to overcome these symptoms. Congestive cramping causes the body to retain fluids and salt. For relief start avoiding wheat and dairy products, alcohol, caffeine, and refined sugar a few days before the periods are due to begin. Please consult your gynecologist and get ultrasound of lower abdomen and pelvis.

Other causes such as IBS, gas, constipation, electrolyte imbalance etc too need to be ruled out. Constipation you have, and this may worsen before periods and cause more pain due to trapped gas. Please discuss all these possibilities with your doctor. . Hope this helps. Take care!
