doctors suspect he caught it before he even dated me

User Profile
Hi Doctor. I am going through a crisis right now. My boyfriend of almost two years learned he had HIV a couple of months back. The doctors had suspected he caught it before he even dated me and I was an idiot and so was he not to get tested before we were initimidate. We always used protection but regardless. About 3 months ago, he started getting very sick and that's when we went to the doctor and he got tested. He was positive, I was negative. We cried but decided to stay together since we loved each other very much. About a month ago he moved back home with his mom to continue treatments. Since then being home, he told me that he wanted to deal with this alone and he thought we should give each other space in order to determine feelings. What is this about? I was living with him when he found out he had it, basically his support and now that he's with his mom I;m chopped liver? I feel so lost and depressed over this. Any idea why he may be acting this? I cry daily!

HIV and AIDS Answer A49206
Hi,
One of the reasons he might want to stay away from you as for now is may be because he wants you to start a new life since you are HIV negative. Another reasoning may be that he doesn't want to get intimidate with you anymore since that may transmit you HIV. It does become difficult to control yourself in high emotional situations. Please know protected sex decreases the chance of HIV transmission but does not reduce it to 0. I recommend psychotherapy for your recent situation. Thank you.
