I have been taking Citalopram 20mg daily for several years and would like to start weaning myself off the treatment. I am not sure of how much I can safely reduce the dosage and over what time period to do this? Any advice?

Sharry,

Unfortunately, everyone is different in how they react to medications. Thus, you should taper under the supervision of a physician.

Citalopram (Celexa) comes in tablets of 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg.

Being on a 20mg dose a day is a fairly normal, usual dose. The maximum daily dose is 40mg.

You may be able to go to 10mg a day for a week or so, then stop it altogether. If the 10mg dose is too much of a drop, you could split a tablet and try 15mg for a week or so, then drop to 10mg, then to 5mg, then off.

But, again, you should do the taper under the supervision of your physician. Good luck.

Thanks Gaelic, am going to try this. Might do it over a longer period though.
