deep sleep every couple mos., wakes hitting, cursing

User Profile
My daughter about every two months give or take, goes into a deep sleep. If we try to wake her up she often throws temper-tantrums, hitting and cursing at whomever is trying to get her up. She will sometimes have a conversation but go right back to sleep. When she finally wakes up, she can't remember anything and is usually very pleasant.
This sleep pattern can last from one to three days. There is no external cause that we can find, so we can't predict when it might occur. Also, she doesn't wake rested.
Can you give us any direction of what we can do to better understand what is happening to her and where to look for answers?

Hi,

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am glad to help you out.

I can understand your concern. There are a few causes for such sleeping pattern and these should be ruled out. These include obesity, depression, excessive work and stress, insomnia, drugs or alcohol, lack of physical activity, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, or narcolepsy.

You need to consult a sleep specialist and get sleep study done for your daughter. This will help in confirming the cause. Once diagnosis is confirmed, treatment can be planned accordingly.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
