I am 73 years old, have a family history of coronary artery disease, and after years of trying one statin after another with differing intolerable side-effects, from muscle weakness to extreme fatigue and burning skin, my cardiologist and I agreed on 5 mg Crestor twice a week after I had been able to tolerate 5 mg once a week. He then added Zetia about 4 months ago, and my cholesterol dropped to under 200 (after being 325 last October. The previous June I had had an angioplasty and stent in my left main coronary artery and am still on Plavix. All was well until I started itching a couple of months ago. I thought it could be tolerated, especially since I'd gotten such good results from the low dose Crestor in conjunction with the Zetia, but gradually over the past few weeks, the rash/itching/hives have gotten so much worse I wake up at night scratching and am very uncomfortable most of the time. Even with the hydrocortisone and "skin calming" cream recommended by my dermatologist, the itching has become intolerable. There seems to have been a cumulative adverse effect over time even though my cardiologist and I were optimistic that this time I'd be able to tolerate the regimen with such a low dose. Oh yes: it seems as though when I'm on a statin, I get a urinary tract infection about every 4 months even though this is not a problem when I'm not on the statins. Yet again, I've taken myself off the statin (after not tolerating all of the others I've tried), and after 5 days am beginning to feel slightly better. At my age (although I'm a very young 73!), I feel I need to weigh quality of life versus longevity, and I'm afraid that I will have to stay off statins altogether.

Thanks to all -- glad I read through this because about a month after increasing my Crestor from 2.5 to 5 mg I started getting lower back pains and feeling tired all day. Although it did significant lower my cholesterol, I'm going to start skipping days and get back to the previous level of Crestor, which I tolerated well.

statin muscle pain
I was in severe pain from taking statin drugs..to the point I asked my doctor for arthritis medicine. She recommended several supplements. I started taking 5 more pills and they helped a ton. I've since switched to statinhelp to reduce the pill count.

I also tried to get off of statin drugs and go entirely vegetarian. I still couldn't get my numbers where they needed to be so had to stay on meds.

I'm 70, reasonably fit and Crestor makes me feel awful. My cardiologist (a Yale guy) says it has been proven to reduce plaque build over time. That's the only reason I am back on the stuff. I have fatigue, leg and back pain and some stomach problems when I'm on the drug. I have some memory problems as well, but not so bad that I can't function. Mostly, I just feel like s**t when I'm on the stuff. My cholesterol is below 200 on a mostly vegan diet, but my doc says the bad cholesterol is still higher than he would like. I also take Toprol and Lisinopril for lowering blood pressure which is completely normal for a guy my age on the drugs. I have three partially blocked arteries in my heart, one is 90%, but I can run a treadmill off the charts with no pain. My doc says its because my heart made new blood vessels to get around the blockage. So, he says the Crestor will reduce inflammation in my arteries and reduce the risk that a piece of plaque could break off and cause a stoke. I have been on and off Crestor several times, but when I am taking it, it makes me totally miserable. It's the old story Damn'd if I do, Damn'd if I don't. Can't they make a better drug than this. Think I will try on for two weeks and off for two weeks and see where it gets me the next time I see my doc.

Really, people!
All I see is a cacophony of comments climbing on the bandwagon as soon as someone indicates a bad reaction. Now, I am not denying that some have had reactions, but compared to the number posters, how many millions use this drug without side effects? I am neither a doctor nor a drug company employee, but a 58 year old male with borderline cholesterol until December 2010. No amount of exercise and diet modification could bring it down. In January 2011, I started taking Crestor. My doctor unwillingly recommended NO MORE than 5 mg as nothing else worked. I have not had any muscle cramps, constipation, hives, or any of the laundry list of problems some people are having. My bad cholesterol has come down 85%! I know Lipitor has some bad side effects. Now, here is the rub - I also take 60 mg of Conezyme Q10 with Crestor. Of course, I also do moderate exercise though eating everything I see, but IN MODERATION! Never felt better!

Good for you! Lets put this in to a context. > Just because there are Millions who do not bother to write about their exeperiences does not mean that they do not exist and that it it is a mere hand full of People having the spit the Dummy. You only been on it for a year or so. It creaps up on you slowly and gradualy over years as it did with me. Please do not ignore the Cat out of the Bag. there is now enough conflicting evidence damning the Statins. Do your research on the Net. There is plenty of it out there warning People. Statistics show People with low Cholesterol died from clogged up Hearts also.

Doctors, faced w/ a growing panic over heart issues, turned to Big Pharma for help, who gladly obliged. "Cholesterol levels must be lowered! That's the ticket! Here, give them THIS!", said pharmaceutical reps everywhere, holding out a bottle of innocent-looking pills. Statins were tossed to patients the world over like popcorn is strewn to pidgeons in the park. Sure, cholesterol levels in patients dropped like magic. A massive PR campaign spread the good news, and doctors appeared to be super-heroes in red capes, which of course everyone knows they are, anyways.
Now we know that cholesterol isn't the culprit, inflammation IS. But it's been a very good ride for Big Pharma and their prescribing doctor-robots, hasn't it?

Get your red-yeast rice while you can, friend. Our friend, the FDA (with an operating budget the size of what it takes West Virginia to run it's school system, at last count), says that if a natural remedy works as rumoured, then it must therefore be regulated, and snatched off the shelves. Then, the very lucrative task of promoting and distributing it will go to..YOU GUESSED IT!...BIG PHARMA! And don't think they haven't been trying to rob you of it all this time. And better make sure that lovely purple cone-flower is well-hidden in your garden, for possessing it could get you some jail-time.

statin side effects
I have learned that Lipitor and Crestor caused me dreadful aching pain in the muscles of my arms, strange dreams, fuzzy headedness... I researched and decided to stop the statins and instead cust out all starchy carbs and fruit and increased the fats and went back to full fat products.
Oh Lordy me!! Pains went and the LDL went down, HDL went up and triglycerides dropped to 0.48.
Lost 20 kgs too!

Crestor is making my hair fall out!
I have been taking statin drugs for several years now. I was changed to Crestor 2 years ago at 20 mg per day. At about the same time I noticed my hair thinning on top of my head starting at the hair line. I have always had very think fine hair. I just chalked it up to old age. Recently my Dr. increased my Crestor to 40 mg. per day. My hair began to fall out all over the place and I am now seeing my scalp! A friend said to me that she was losing her hair due to her "statin drug". I could not believe my ears.....no one told me this was a side effect of statin drugs. I quickly researched online and found that STATIN DRUGS DO CAUSE HAIR LOSS. It is a side effect that the pharmaceutical companies do not tell you. Considering all the other reported side effects and my oncoming baldness, I am considering going off Crestor and trying natural remedies such as fish oil and red yeast, and this is very scary for me as my cholesterol without drugs is around 350. I would appreciate any advice on natural methods. I want off these drugs!

Statins, dementia and cholesterol
My mother is in a nursing home because of this stuff- memory loss and muscle damage. Try going to amazon and search for books on cholesterol myth, or cholesterol con, and you can find out that cholesterol is necessary for brain function among other things, and the whole thing is a money maker for the drug companies. You have to educate yourself to stay healthy. Statins are poison. Period.

I've been on Crestor 20 for about 10 years and like many of you have experienced the fatigue and muscle cramps in my legs and other weird places on my body. The recent medical news that Crestor, lipitor in this dosage has been shown to cause kidney failure and death IN SOME USERS has made me re-think a bit... I am 72 yrs old and have decided to stop this medication ( I mean... whats the point now ). It's been a week and the only notable change I have noticed is an occasional sense of anxiety and a terribly annoying sense of having butterflies in my gut when laying down. I don't know of there is a connection but I am throwing it out there in case anyone else feels a similar sensation.

Ugh, thank god for you all. But just about 30 minutes ago it hit me. Ugh this feeling the past three weeks is just awful. That is how I found you guys. I typed in “feel like crap Crestor” and poof here you all were.
Lord, after I ate I would go to bed - felt just awful, weak dizzy. I started stabbing myself with glucose testing thinking well here is diabetes! Actually been low (not hypo) just low.
Confused the heck out of me by yesterday and I thought OK giving this a run for the money. Went to kitchen got out SUGAR (!) Mixed with very hot water. Waited 10 minutes to make sure all dissolved and drank. NOTHING happened to my glucose. Don’t know if that in and of it is bad but boy that was a rule out. My doctor is awesome and will let him know tomm but I am not eating any more of that c***!!
Relief to know that exactly what is described hits it right on. It was really intense right after I ate? See ya Crestor (at least a hearty attack one understands what the heck is going on!!!) Thanx!

Statins equal Poision
All Statins are causing more problems and is shrowded with controversy. Counter statistics and research show that there is No bad Statins but an incentive for a $30 Billion industry. Sadly I think many Doctors who may already know that prescribing Statins is detrimental appear to be the Meat in the Sandwich along with Cardiologist. All afraid they may be sued if they did not prescribe Statins to their Patient.
Having taken Statins for most part of the 15 years and having had numerous ill effects ranging from memory loss, concentration issues, weak Leg Muscles, Leg twitches, decline in Lung fitness, depresion, hightened anxiety levels, left side of my Chest hurting with a burning sensation, Throat discomfort issues, head feeling as if stuffed with Cotton, general feeling of being unwell, loss of libido, loss of vitality. All sound familiar? You may have experienced some of these and wondered what was wrong? In the early stages I went to have my Throat checked by a Specialist > Negative! Some years later had my Brain checked to see if I had some Tumour? Negative! Money I wasted only to eventually find out that it was the STATINS having caused all of these issues! Since I stopped using these Statins my Body healed and I felt more like a healthy person again. I forgot what a healthy person felt like?
To top it all of > All the Statins over these years did NOT prevent me from a triple Byapass operation in 2009.
I should sue them All for the suffering the Statins caused me. nurse
