Could the hot flashes be a sign of pregnancy or...?

User Profile
I have been pregnant three times and each time I dealt with hot flashes. Now, my period is 10 days late and I am not experiencing any pregnancy symptoms besides the missed period and occasional cramping. I am only 25 years old so I do not like to think that my hot flashes could be an indicator of menopause. Could the hot flashes be a sign of pregnancy or be a result of my hormones going crazy? If so, is there anything I can do to help relieve and/or prevent the hot flashes? Thank you.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum!

Well, a decrease in estrogen level with the onset of pregnancy causes hot flashes. Hot flashes can be due to severe acid reflux and H pylori infection which can become aggravated in pregnancy. It can be due to hormonal imbalance related to PCOD. Hot beverages including soups, tea, coffee can also be the cause, so can hot baths.

To deal with these you need to find the cause and eliminate that. Wear loose cotton clothes. Drink plenty of cool fluids. Consult your gynecologist. Hope this helps. Take care!
