Compulsive sponge eating - Pica (Page 2)

March 28th, 2010
So glad there are people out there with the same addiction as me!! Don't remember how mine started - think I was about 9 and I stopped at 22 but have started getting my cravings again - I'm now 25!! Not going to lie, the main reason I ate them is to keep slim - would rather have sponge that all my tea - hence the reason I have started again. Rumour had it Victoria Beckham had or has this addiction.
I remember telling my dr and they were like "oh. Ok" I did tell a partner once - as it was part of my eating disorder and I used to do it in front of him although that was the biggest mistake as when we split up he decided to broadcast it to everyone so I was getting abusive messages calling me spongebob. My habit didn't cause us to split but I will make sure that no one ever finds out I do it - I am just glad I'm not the only one as it has felt that way for years!

my little girl has just told me that she cant stop eating sponge. 2 packs went and i new i didn''t use them.she is afraid now that she may of done damage as sometimes they weren''t clean im shocked and have never heard o this. im not buying sponges anymore only clothes. im glad she has told me. parents need to help and not get angry ..and she was afraid of the latter for a long time, i new she did it when young .. she is 12yrs now and has got worst. can puberty be a factor in this craving? if you are young tell you parents or doctor. they should help you. im going to doctors tomorrow.. will come in and let you know what she says...

PiCA - Sponge eating habit
Oh my goodness, I can identify with most of these cases, I started eating sponge from a dining chair, how that happened I will never know, then pillows and soft toys. It has gotten so bad over the years that, people have found out, my family know about it my husband and kids, I even send my son to Asda to by 8 to 10 yellow car sponges at a time, (special offer 2 for 50p)I can eat between 1 or 2 a day, I do try to limit myself but it''s difficult. When I eat too much I have stomach ache''s and terribble toilet isssues. Now even my colleauges at work are aware. I have tried and can''t stop it. When I have a stressful day I eat more. I do have an iron shortage, but am rubbish at taking tablets, may be I will really try and see if it will curb the cravings, I know this is a weird and strange addiction, but it has go so bad I carry sponge with me in my bag to get through the day. I would love to get help, but how do you tell a Dr this out load? I have eaten sponge on and off for about 25 years, crazy when you think about it. It is good to know I am not alone.

I can't believe that there are so many of us suffering with this! I've managed to stop buying kitchen sponges but now get through at least 1 cushion inner every week- I have to keep rotating which wilkos i go to because I'm scared someone will notice that all I ever buy there is cushions... Just wish i knew what caused it, but it's not really the sort of thing you can drop into conversation!

i have got rid of most of the things i crave in my house but get super excited baout visiting friends etc. becasue i no they will ALAWAYS have cushions etc for me to indulge in.i've even gone into my local supermerket picked up a cushion and serectly opened the zip made a hole and grabbed a handful of polyester fibres and stuffed them in my bag then walked around the plae eating it. i've never been caught because i'm just to good at it now. i'm a prisioner/ i enjoy tasing diffrent textures and think my biggest craving is the way it feels going down my throat, the straching. i no im crazy but it satisfies me in a way nothing else does. im offiially addicted its my own sort of cocaine.

Fellow sponge eaters!!
It's so reassuring to find other sponge-eaters. I think we all know it's kinda ridiculous, but I just cannot find it in me to stop. I love eating sponge!! It's so strange because it's a taste which is so very difficult to describe the flavour I crave so much constantly, alas, as long as I can remember, I've consumed sponges as if they are a food. I find that now I can't go a day without at least a little bit, I sit in college and genuinely look forward to having some sponge when I get home; it calms me down and I love the taste and texture. I know that one of my friends has the same crave for sponge and we kept it a secret however, I've been with my boyfriend for a very long time now and we tell each other everything so I decided I'd tell him about my crazy addiction and he just laughed to himself, so i made him try some thinking that everyone must just like the taste but he thought it was awful, something i can't understand!! I really hope we aren't all causing harm to out bodies, I wish I could stop, think and realise what exactly I'm doing - consuming sponges - but I'd miss chewing too much!! I'm glad there are others in the world like me, I hope we are all alright!!

OMG! this is the most extensive forum I have ever seen on the topic of sponge consumption! I am 28 and have never been pregnant and have been chewing sponge since elementary! I love the smell, texture, and taste of sponge! I just ordered a egg crate sponge mattress topper just to chew it---so pathetic and funny right?! I do not know what is wrong with me, I have never told a doctor. My mom thinks I am crazy and teases me about it. I also love to chew cotton but not as much as sponge. I love grinding it all the way to little tiny pieces in my mouth and then spit it out. I had no idea that many other people love it too. I was told that I had smaller red blood cells and am slightly anemic.

i am so relived to see there are many people with my problem. my sponge eating started when i was realy young as wall. and still goes on to this day. i will eat sponges for cleaning dishes, cusings, toys, pillows, feet warmers. anyting you can think of with sponge in it. ive noticed that when i get realy stressed out its at its worst. it gets so bad sometimes that i cant even stop myself. i dont do it as often as i use to. but when i get cravings for it ill go out and buy someting with sponge in it just to eat it.the funny thing is i dont like all sponge. it has to have a certain smell and texture to it.

1 day at a time
Wooooow! Ok so it started with the sponge on my box spring when I was like 9. Now at 23 I find myself purchasing sponge rollers from the beauty supply store just to eat. The color doesn't matter although I usually get the pink ones, I honestly look for a specific texture it has to be firm if it's too soft I get pissed off and leave the store. When o see how many random plastic pink sponge roller rods lay around my room I question myself seriously and with no justification I eat more): the only issue I find is that if I consume too much within a week my it kinda tears my butthole when I "booboo"((TMI)) I know. It comes out of my body that way the same day or usually the following. IDK what to do, I don't like this addictive behavior !! To try to stop I try to meditate and fight myself to overcome as oppose to easily submitted, and as a result, my beauty supply trips have lessened (: PRAY FOR ME, DON'T JUDGE ME!!

It's interesting that although we're all addicted to basically the same thing, we all seem to have unique cravings Smile I prefer quite rough aerated sponge/cushion filler but this seems to differ from person to person... I wonder why?

Sponge eating Pica
Ok heres the lowdown.I am so glad that I am not the only one. I started sucking water out of bath sponges when I was a child. Then I wore braces and got a tiny particle caught in my brace and it tasted yummy. the texture in my mouth was like nothing else. My mum realised and stopped buying bath sponges. She was really unsympathetic and told everyone that I ate sponges it made me feel like a freak but it didn't stop me. I even ate the sponge applicator off the shoe shine for my dads shoes which was full of synthetic polish. Throughout my teenage years I was bullied badly and I could not wait to eat sponges instead I used to eat cotton wool and other fibres. By the time I had finished school I had ate the whole entire lining out of my winter coat. I was diagnosed as Anaemic when I was twelve but never thought that it was connected. I remained on Iron tablets until I was eighteen. the cravings stopped only for them to reoccur but I don't know why this happened. I am now thirty five years old and eating on average four sponges each day. I have to go around different supermarkets as people know me and at times have been known to walk four miles to a 24 hour store just to get a sponge. I have now started stealing sponge scourers from the kitchen where I work. This has gone un noticed as I place the cleaning orders and order extra each month. The only medical problems I have are slight back ache from eating too many. The cleaning supervisor keeps finding the scourer part in the bin and wants to know who is doing this. I cannot tell her that its me. People already think that I am odd and I don't want people to know about this. I am happy coping with this and have gone cold turkey before but I started eating other peoples sponges. I even ate my nieces duck sponge. If I see a sponge that is being used to do dishes I think that this is a waste as I could have eaten it. The thing that I don't like about this is the secrecy and creeping around that I have to do.

I Love you... Sponge
Wow , a million times wow, I am seriously starting to think that a lot of women love sponge, but again everyone is just too hesitant to share . I am Portuguese and since I was about 8 or nine I would get the sponge from the sofa cushions as well, although my mum found out she never made a big deal out of it. Living on my own now (25) there are times of the month that I need it more and again , the texture of the sponge in my mouth is what I crave for , i make sure I keep it dry and take as much time to swallow it as I can , my mouth waters every time I see a sponge. Now I feel somehow more reassured about this habit, knowing that Im not alone in this makes me feel better. Thank you for sharing
