Combination pill or a progesterone pill only?

User Profile
I need to start taking birth control pills. I was prescribed Crisanta before and had continued for a month. Is it okay to start on the 7th day after the periods? Secondly is Crisanta a combination pill or a progesterone pill only? Is it better to use a combination pill? Thanks.

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
Crisanta contains a hormone known as Drospirenone, which acts similar to male hormones called as androgens. It should be taken as prescribed from the first day of menstrual periods and at the same time daily to have full effectiveness. If started late, it does not give adequate protection against pregnancy.
The decision of which pill would suit you the best, lies with your treating gynecologist who decides based on examination findings and your medical condition. Discuss about various types of birth control pills and their effects with him/her before starting on any one.
Take care.
