madore,

The most likely cause is medications. Many, many medicines cause xerostomia (excessive dry mouth).

Some of the culprits, often used by arthritis patients include: narcotic pain medicine (the opioids cause a very dry mouth, dry eyes, and constipation), the NSAIDs, antidepressants (Cymbalta, Savella), nerve pain modulators (Neurontin, Lyrica), benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium), antihistamines (Benadryl), sleeping pills (Ambien, Lunesta), and high blood pressure medicines (diuretics).

There are over 1,800 prescription medicines which can cause dry mouth.

So, you might take a look at the medicines you are taking. If you cannot stop them, there are some things you can do. And it is important to keep the mouth moist, because dry mouth can cause significant tooth decay, right at the gum level. Which are very hard to treat.

Hope you figure out the cause.
