Thank you for your question on ehealthforum.com

Polycystic ovaries syndrome is one of the common causes of infertility. It happens as a result of an abnormality in metabolism of androgen and estrogen, and control of androgen production. It is caused by an excessive stimulatory effect of LH (luteinizing hormone) from the pituitary gland leading to excess androgens production (testosterone, andrestenedione). Uninterrupted action of LH causes normal ovarian cysts to enlarge and produce androgens in an excessive quantity to cause symptoms of PCOS which are infertility, weight gain, hirsuitism, peripheral resistance to insulin and hyperinsulinemia etc.

Dianette contains ethenylestradiol and cyproterone, which are essentially meant for contraception and are used in PCOS to regulate hormonal levels. Cyproterone is anti-androgen and negates the effects of androgen symptoms like hirsuitism. It prevents further worsening of the body hair problem, however, doesn’t have any effect on already present body hair. It is a very good combination preferred for contraception and in PCOS, though certain women gain weight, but most of the time it is suggested to continue the medication considering its good effects on body hair and hormonal levels. But, if you notice a significant increase in weight gain, you might want to consider speaking to your doctor again with regard to a change in medication. Thank you.
