Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
The risks of birth defects with use of valproate are about 2-5 times higher than with other frequently used anti-epileptic medications. The risks for neural tube defects increase by 1.5%. Other abnormalities include chances of hypospadias, heart defects, craniofacial & skeletal abnormalities, developmental delay, lower IQ levels in baby. You should consider discussing with your treating doctor about getting started on altered medications if you are pregnant. Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately.
Take care.
