Can an ultrasound be wrong?

User Profile
I had an emergency ultrasound this past tuesday because I've been bleeding throughout my whole pregnancy. I'm 15w 1d and I dont know how accurate the U/S would be at this point. After she looked at what she needed to she began to try to see the sex of the baby. Well this kid was so hyper! She couldnt even get a good picture because he/she was standing on its head, and doing front flips! It was hilarious! Very Happy

Well the lady said, it looks like a boy! Of course I'm gonna be happy, but I wanted to know if it was a boy for sure. I asked her "Is it a boy or does it LOOK like a boy?" She said it just "looks like a boy". So I dont know if I should be excited about it maybe being a boy, or if I should wait until the next one to see if it really is a boy.

In my heart of hearts, I feel like its a GIRL! I've dreamt of it being a girl, this pregnancy is totally different from my first with my son, and of course my family thinks its a girl! I dont want anyone to think that I'm being ungrateful, because I should be happy that the baby is fine considering all the things wrong with me! I am, I just really want to know if I should tell my family that its a boy and we're not even sure yet!

So my question is, does anyone think that the ultrasound could have been wrong? It's amazing how similar the boy and girl parts look at this point!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Smile

Yes, they can be wrong. I was pretty lucky with mine she just laid there and when she lifted her legs to kick it was a clear girl! Smile

As long as your baby is healthy. I would confirm with the next ultrasound. Smile

Good luck!

Well I've been on bed rest the last few days and been watching the discovery channel baby network on demand, and they said all fetuses start out with what looks like a penis, and if it's a girl it changes into girl parts between 15-18 weeks. They say ultrasounds aren't usually accurate till about 20 weeks and sometimes not even completely then. Unfortunately I think it maybe to soon to tell what the little squirmer may be. My DR wouldn't confirm for us what we were having till 24 weeks, and it was a girl. I felt the entire time since I found out I was pregnant it was a boy, so shows how much I know. HAHAHA. Good luck with everthing and I hope you don't have any more bleeding or complications.

its very possible that it could be wrong, she may have saw the umbilical cord and mistaken it for a penis since the baby was moving around so much

id wait until the next ultrasound to get excited Smile

Well I had to go to the ER again on monday for severe cramping and bleeding, luckily the baby was just fine, but I did get another u/s. The technician said that she was almost positive that its a boy! My first born is a boy so we still have all of his baby clothes which is wonderful so we wont go around buying clothes for the wrong gender! I really dont care what it is, I'm just really happy that even after all this bleeding I'm doing, and my doctors are complete morons and have no clue whats wrong with me, my baby is still healthy!

ultrasounds are never 100% the sure thing.
they sometimes are wrong, they usually tell you when you get your ultrasound done that its not a 100% sure thing.
They usually say if you can see something it could be a boy, but then again it could be the cord mistaken for boy parts, its not a very clear thing to see when theres movement plus alot of liquid in the way and looks all blurry.

Yeah, they can be wrong.

My aunt was told it was a boy. She got plenty of blue stuff. Then, iT WAS A GIRL!!!!

So, they can mess those things up from time to time.

All other pregnancy's i've known about have been right though.

CONGRATULATIONS either way! Very Happy

is the ultrasound wrong
Im still so confused.I had my ultrasound at 20 weeks.right on the day i was 20 weeks and the baby was faced down the entire time!so they guessed a girl but said i needed to come back in two days and they would confirm.Well when i went back the baby was still faced down and they couldnt get a clear shot.so i walked around for awhile, came back and the baby did a complete flip and was now on its back.they said they couldnt see anything that would make them think a boy so the tech said she thinks its a girl but didnt even want to write girl on our pictures because she wasnt sure sure.she did give me a picture of 3 white spots which she said is normaly seen with girls but her not being sure sure has got me on edge.ive felt from day one that this a boy even dreamed it was a litle boy,and because there is no problems that will be my only ultrasound.is it possible she could be wrong?or have i just convinced myself of a boy?

browneyedbeauty,
i totally understand where you're coming from. I'm 19 weeks and 4 days today and i just had my ultrasound 2 days ago and the ultrasound tech had told me it was a BOY but i was totally expecting a GIRL for many reasons; chinese gender calendar, old wives tales & the differences of this pregnancy compared to my pregnancy of my son but ofcourse either way we'd be happy & blessed & we too, thought so much that we were having a girl that we expected to see a girls part but i'm still skeptical about the ultrasound & the pictures. I have been showing my friends my ultrasound and all of them have agreed that its not even clear to see that its a boy or a girl... also the umbilical cord is right in the middle of babys legs... and i did not enjoy my ultrasound tech, she was so quick, barely talked and was just uninformative. i say that was the crappiest ultrasound session i've ever had... i'm scheduling another ultrasound to be done in about 2 weeks and we sure hope to get a clear and accurate picture! I'm so happy to know i'm not the only one left in this CURIOUS situation... hope everything gets better with your pregnancy!!

Hello, i am so confused i had my U/S at 19 wks 6 days the U/S tech was very young and inexperienced. She had me in the U/S room for 30 min and was even hurting me i had to ask her to stop a few times. She said if she had to guess she would say "girl" because she did not see any boy parts. When i asked her to show me the girl parts so that i could be sure she couldnt she said the baby was moving way to much. I am happy either way but this is our first child i just want to plan the nursery. Do you think i should go off of her not seeing any boy parts? Or do you think the absence of boy parts does not necessarily mean girl? Please let me know. Thanks for your input.
