Welcome to e health forum.

The regular menstrual cycle in a woman is regulated by secretion of hormones from the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and those from the ovary. Any defect in any of these three sites can change the cyclic changes that occur in the ovary and the uterus and hence influence the menstrual flow.

Irregular periods are usually due to abnormal hormone levels as a result of altered pattern of hormone secretion.

The most common cause for otherwise normal women would be hormonal changes associated with stress, anxiety, excessive work or exercise related issues.

Other causes that can present in similar pattern would be due to Severe anxiety, acute weight changes, eating disorders (Bulemia), Athletes (Rigorous exercise), conditions like ovarian cysts (with irregular cycles), uterine fibroids, Hormonal conditions (Eg Dysfunctional uterine bleeding) and hypothyroidism.

If you keep getting such issues over the next few months it would be recommended to consult your OB-GYN and seek proper medical advice and help.

I hope this helps.
