I gave birth 6 weeks back. 5 days back my husband and I had unprotected sex. Yesterday,we went to the doctor for a copper t. I had slight spotting/bleeding but the doctor assumed it was the onset of my periods and inserted Freedom 5 . Today there was no bleeding at all.It seemed to have stopped. So, these are my questions.

1.What are my chances of getting pregnant?
2.If I'm already pregnant, and the IUD was inserted later would the IUD cause an abortion?
3.What was the bleeding? Is it because I still havent healed completely, was it an implantation related bleeding or is it possible that it was periods?
4.Is freedom 5 hormonal in nature?
5.Does the Freedom 5 IUD work as an emergency contraceptive as I have read in a lot of online forums?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
The bleeding that you experienced after intercourse could have been precipitated due to orgasm causing uterine contraction and endometrial separation. The answers to your other questions:
1.What are my chances of getting pregnant? ----- If your fertility/ovulation has returned, the chances of pregnancy are possible. If the ovulation has not returned due to lactation amenorrhrea, chances of pregnancy can be ruled out.
2.If I'm already pregnant, and the IUD was inserted later would the IUD cause an abortion? ----- If you have gotten pregnant, then the IUD will prevent implantation of fertilized ovum.
3.What was the bleeding? Is it because I still havent healed completely, was it an implantation related bleeding or is it possible that it was periods? ----- Implantation bleeding usually results within 6-12 days of fruitful intercourse, hence chances of this bleeding being implantation bleeding is less likely.
4.Is freedom 5 hormonal in nature? ----- Most IUDs have copper in them that cause the endometrial and local changes to prevent pregnancy. Few contain hormones in them that prevent pregnancy. Freedom 5 contains copper in it.
5.Does the Freedom 5 IUD work as an emergency contraceptive as I have read in a lot of online forums? ----- Yes, if the IUD is inserted within 3-5 days of unprotected intercourse, it can work as emergency contraception.
Take care.
