been treated for depression for 15+ years

User Profile
have been treated for depression for 15+ years, using over 30 meds.Have seen 4 psychiatrist, 2 neurologist(states I have a healthy brain). Have VNS system. All to no avail.
My mental condition has been getting worse over the years, no energy is the worst problem, can hardly function in daily living. Have been on Ritalin for 2 years, no energy...It all started with personality change, now I have no personality. Do no function outside the home. Could someone please help me? I used to be a vivacious, energetic, happy person; now I don't want to live any longer. No thought of suicide at this point. I should mention I am 72 years old. I have never felt or looked my age until the last two years, now it is just horrible. I have worked in the medical field all my life, so I am not stupid or lazy.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum!

You appear to be going through severe menopausal depression. The good news is that it can be overcome with proper hormonal therapy, which will restore the hormone balance. This could have started in your fifties, and worsened over the years. Please consult a gynecologist. Get FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone level assessed.

Apart from hormone replacement therapy which may help, regular exercise, yoga, and healthy diet can go a long way in helping you. Join a counseling session. Hope this helps. Take care!
