Bed shaking at night (Page 9)

September 3rd, 2011
Thank you for this post - same here
Thank you so much for this post and comments!
For several times I felt my bed shaking (earthquake kind of feeling) right before falling asleep.

About 10 years ago I experienced a sleep paralysis episode accompanied with horrifying hallucination when I woke up from a bad dream. Today it happened again (this morning) so I decided to google it before I decide that I'm going nuts, and make up either if I should make an appointment with a neurologist or call an exorcist. lol

It still freaks me out a little when I think about the horrifying sensation that I experienced when I couldn't move and the overwhelming feeling that someone or something was in the bedroom with me... staring at me... a feeling of eminent danger. Well... At least I know that I'm not the only one Razz If I am to be abducted by aliens... see you all in Mars! muahahahaah

I am amazed that none of your doctors have been able to put your mind at rest. I read many threads with "I know I am awake". Wrong! You may think you are awake but your brain is in a relaxed state and is such a powerful organ it is suprising how it makes us feel and act.
I have has Narcolepsy/Cataplexy for over 20 years and now understand its basic patterns. What you are feeling are effects from restless leg syndrome.involuntory leg movements that make it feel as if someone has either run past the bed and hit it or even pushed you yourself. I was convinced there was something else at the root of it. Also as you drop off you feel like your falling for a brief second and your glad your eyes are open when you catch yourself before the drop.
It was my partner then at the time that described to me what was happening as at one time I blamed her .
Don't underestimate the power of your brain. It will fool you more times than you will understand it. Even if your convinced it is other forces at work Smile

I've experienced a vibration thru the mattress a few times, the first about 35 years ago! The last a couple of nights ago, which is why I'm checking the web out for answers. They have been different beds and different homes and I was definaely awake the first time. It scared me so much that I jumped out of bed and put my hands on the mattress to feel if it was really vibrating or if I was imagining it. It was definately vibrating and I was definately wide awake and standing up....... It's still a mystery??????

Came to this site looking for the same answers. Unexplained shaking of the bed..and other things in the room. Also contacted the USGS and the Boston Center to see if there is any seismic activity in the area, because I really believed it to be an earthquake. It's not just me that feels it, but my husband and kids as well. Thinking this house may be on a poor foundation, I really don't know. The weird thing is its only at night. Glad we are not the only ones who are experiencing this.

I am having the same problem. I understand what Mitford is explaining about the hypnotic jerk. I have had experienced that since I was a child. It usually occurs right when I am falling asleep and I dream I am falling and then I have the violent jerk. This is much different. I am still awake. I don't feel the bed shaking as much as I feel something pushing me. I also feel like something or someone is sitting on my bed. I am totally a sane human being and I don't drink or do drugs either. It's interesting to note that people state they have pillow-top mattress'. I have one as well and come to think of it, this started after I got the mattress. I am also wondering if it's my heart beat. I am usually laying on my side when it happens. It's scaring me. I sleep alone and I don't like this. I had a friend spend the night and it didn't happen when she was in my bed, probably the first time it hasn't happened in a year or so. This is disturbing, you can make light of it all you want, but it's a real phenominon and I am glad I am not the only one experiencing it. I hope someone can figure this out or I am going to start sleeping on the floor.

Bed Shaking and Tapping next to my bed.
I feel the same thing quite often. Maybe about 5 times a week. But for me it happens during the day/late afternoon. I will be sitting in my bed, maybe reading or watching tv, and the bed will start shaking quite vigorously. It doesn't scare me or give me a bad vibe, but it is quite strange. I also hear tapping on the drawers next to my bed at night. The tapping is always in a constant rhythm but stops as soon as I lift my head slightly, and then it starts again when my head is on my pillow. The tapping happens from once a week to every couple of days.

This has happened to me as well on two occasions. First time it happened it scared me so bad that I switched beds. Now it happened randomly in the new bed last night. It lasted for 3 minutes. The floor was not shaking I put my hand on it. It was just the bed. I watched my legs they were not moving. I could physically feal just the bed vibrate. I wonder what this is.

'bed shaking'
I too have been experiencing the bed shaking when I'm trying to go to sleep or get in the bed period. It's been happening for a couple of years now and is starting to happen more than in the past. It's to the point that my husband thinks I am having sex (how, I don't know) but it's causing problems with my marriage. The thing is, I'm completely awake and I know when it's happening and it's mainly in my lower leg region. When I feel it, I know he do too because he takes a deep breathe, get up and smoke a cigarette and have an attitude towards me like I've done something wrong. The whole time it's happening, I'm trying my best to make it stop, but it won't. There has been several times I've gotten out of the bed just so I don't get disrespected from something I have no control over. He actually think I'm cheating, well, having sex with someone else. I'm so innocent and he don't understand it. It's getting to the point that I want to leave simply because he don't understand. Also, when I do get out of the bed and sit in my computer chair, I can still feel the shaking (lightly) in my legs. It's very annoying. Any suggestions besides spiritual?

Heart beat
This is most likely a heartbeat/pulse issue. I have this happen all the time. Its tricky because you can feel your heart beat through every area of your body. It is easier to feel/ feels more intense in different areas. so when you touch the bed to feel it "vibrate" you can feel the pulse in your hand if your heart beat is strong. This is the same reason that when you are measuring your own pulse, you dont use your index finger because the pulse is easily felt in that finger. (ever notice how nurses dont use their pointer finger when taking your pulse? its so they dont feel their own pulse.

--Something is in the mattress--
For me this was the hardest thing to figure out. I have found however that it is the Aortic artery. When the Aorta leaves the heart it heads south in a very large branch and splits before entering your legs. This is what caused the feeling. I am a thin person so my heartbeat is easy to see through my chest, and when my heart is really pumping hard (not necessarily faster than normal, just really hard) you can actually see my stomach/lower abdomen pulsating. If i am lying on my stomach it feels like something is poking around on my stomach. This at first cause me some anxiety because it feels very foreign... people arent used to feeling their heartbeat in their stomach, but in time a learned that it was just my aorta pulsing away. The thinner you are, the less fat you have to cushion the pulse from being felt outside the body, and when you stomach sleep you have only a thin layer of fat/muscle between your organs and your aorta and the bed. This makes it easy for the pulse to literally push against the mattress creating this feeling.

--bed/body rocking--
My bed shakes frequently, as does my body, when i sleep. This is because when the heart beats, it pumps blood out to the rest of the body. The pulse then in other areas is not felt at the exact moment the heart beats. As i said above, the aorta is the most easily felt and largest vessel to feel a pulse in (mine is clearly visible if im laying on my back). If i am stomach sleeping, my heart beats causing my body to surge forward, and a split second later, my pulse surges in my abdomen causing my body to rock back the other way. This is why the vibrating may not feel like it is in tune with your heartbeat: because it is a combination of your heart beat AND your pulse in various other parts of your body.

if you put you put your hand on your heart and abdomen at the same time, you will notice this delay. This can become a bigger problem and lead to more vigorous shaking/rocking if you have several areas where you can easily feel your pulse. Then, when you get freaked out by the shaking, it causes your heart rate to increase... making even more shaking.

This can happen at any time. Even as i type this i can feel my heartbeat pushing against the chair and rocking me. next time you really feel your heart pounding go lay flat on your stomach and see if the feeling is similar.

** not saying that there isnt any other possibility, but i think this could be the answer for a majority of the suffers.

most people dont constantly feel their heartbeat, so they dont even think about it if this kind of thing happens. it takes them by surprise. Once you realize it, its easy to figure out.

Its kind of like how you dont have to think about breathing, but once you do its really hard not to consciously breath until you forget about it all over again.

home this helps.

If you are thin person, this is most likely the cause.

Bed shaking caught on video!
Well, all of these are very good explanations. One time when I was in bed and the shaking started up, I decided to just get up - that was about 3:30 am. One of my daughters was also experiencing the bed saking in her room at the same time. Her chair was shaking, and the clothing hanging on her door hook "moving" and she video'd it with her cellphone. Later that morning about 6am, both my daughter and I were downstairs and we both saw the Christmas tree shaking! It was not shaking violently or anything like that, but, more an "up and down" waving of the branches and the ornaments were moving too!!!
Another day this same week we were both downstairs and the tree started shaking again! I got up to video it on my iPad, and as I did so - my daughter said it felt like someone/something was pulling on her head! I - We saw nothing!
What's this all about, and why are so many people experiencing bed shaking and stuff moving?

I feel much better to know that I am not alone or crazy. My bed has definitely just started shaking in the last few weeks and it has scared me horribly. I started praying recently and burning sage because I've been afraid it was a ghost, although I've never been religious. My four year old son sleeps with me and I am afraid of him being frightened by it. I feel it when I am awake and alone or in the middle of the night when I have been sleeping. It is a light rocking kind of feeling like someone standing at the end of the bed shaking mattress gently with both hands. I have also felt like some sort of tucked me in or held me down with the blankets. Earlier today it felt like my cat was walking in the bed but she was asleep on floor. I want someone to give me an explanation that fits. I think I have heard noises in house also before bed started shaking but I tried to convince myself this can't be real.

Bed Shaking--me too
I had this happen. My bed was shaking hard and there were black shadows on my ceiling. I awoke to this. At first I thought it was an earthquake, though we don't get those where I live. Then I realized it was a spiritual thing and all I could think of was the song I'd learned in church that there was "power in the name of Jesus" so I shouted "Jesus!" and that bed hit the floor and stopped shaking and the black shadows went away. Scary. But cool, too.

This has also happened to me. According to me you are in some weird sleep state when this happens and you think you are totally awake but you are not.

im not quite sure if im on the correct site..my apologies im english and was brought up in a small town on the outskirts of london..my parents were given a chance to move there in the 1960s due to a housing shortage, kids were still playing in the rubble of luftwaffe bombings.
I grew up in the 1970s in a new town built around old and discovered in later years that there had been a roman settlement at one stage.
As the town expanded, during dredging works a farmer in 1986 was alerted to an amazing find of roman coins,in an old urn that had been hooked on an old tree stump, over a thousand now can be viewed at the museum in stevenage, hertfordshire uk.
My friends and i used to muck about in the woods there..very strange.
We moved into the old town in the early 80s and i had my own room, things were fine with me for about a year..maybe i was worried for some reason but i had a weird experience that i still cant explain to this day.
One saturday morning on my weekend off,my bed rocked up and down as if by unseen hands,i must have been as white as a sheet as i remember calling mum..and nothing came from me.
Weeks later when i plucked up the courage to tell her she didnt like it and i was never to mention it again.
I carried on as normal and one restless night, completely awake and in darkness i heard a rustling in the corner..i was silently petrified and an old cardboard box of ephemera became the interest of something otherwordly..searching.
The pinching of toes i wont divulge to you on another night and fortunately due to circumstance we moved away and i was releived..an old roman soldier passing through?..we dont get earthquakes in england.
