Arthritis Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Arthritis is a joint disorder featuring inflammation. A joint is an area of the body where two different bones are meet. A joint functions to move the body parts connected by its bones. Arthritis literally means inflammation of one or more joints.

Types of arthritis

Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Infectious arthritis
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

Causes of Arthritis

The causes of arthritis depend on the type of arthritis. Causes include injury, metabolic abnormalities, hereditary factors, the direct and indirect effect of infections and a misdirected immune system with autoimmunity.

Symptoms of Arthritis

Symptoms of arthritis include pain and limited function of joints. Inflammation of the joints from arthritis is characterised by joint stiffness, redness, swelling, and warmth. Tenderness of the inflamed joint can be present.

Treatment of Arthritis

The aim of treatment is to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent further joint damage. Exercise can help relieve stiffness, reduce pain and fatigue, and improve muscle and bone strength.

Exercise programs may include:-

Low-impact aerobic activity
Strength training for muscle tone
Range of motion exercises for flexibility

Physical therapy may be recommended. This include the following:-

Heat or ice
Splints to support joints and help improve their position; this is often needed for rheumatoid arthritis
Massage
Water therapy
