Am I jumping the gun or could these be signs of pregnancy?

User Profile
My periods are very regular, always last 6-7 days. My last "period" on October 17th barely lasted 3 days, my breasts are very sore and during sex a few days ago I had a little bleeding. My husband and I have only been using the pull out method since I cannot use birth control due to a bilateral pulmonary embolism a year ago. Am I jumping the gun or could these be signs of pregnancy?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
If you are not on any regular birth control measure, then following the pullout method can put you at risk for pregnancy. The pullout/withdrawal method of contraception is known to be associated with highest failures, and chances of pregnancy cannot be ruled out if you were during your fertile days/around ovulation time around the time of your sexual contact (pre-cum/pre-ejaculatory fluid is known to contain sperms and no man can be 100% sure that pre-cum/pre-ejaculatory fluid did not leak out during vaginal penetration). If fertile mucus had been present at time of intercourse, sperms can stay alive for 5-7 days and fertilize the egg upon ovulation. After ovulation, egg has only 24-48 hours to get fertilized. The recent symptoms that you describe could be few of early symptoms suggestive of pregnancy. Wait and watch for your periods. Look out for development of any other new symptoms if pregnancy is suspected. If periods do not start within 10 days of expected period dates, or if you get abnormal periods, or if you suspect chances of pregnancy, consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist at the earliest for thorough examination (to confirm pregnancy related changes/signs in body) and blood/serum HCG level test (to confirm/rule out pregnancy accurately).Sometimes you can keep getting false negative results with urine pregnancy test kits during early pregnancy as the kits are calibrated ones, so unless the hormone levels in urine reach a certain level, they do not show positive results. Urine pregnancy test kits usually start showing positive results after about 18-20 days post-conception (roughly corresponding to about 1 week after your missed/altered periods). The test should always be done on early morning first urine sample to get accurate results (pregnancy hormone HCG is believed to be in highest concentration in this sample, and you should avoid lot of fluid intake and caffeinated beverages in the night before taking the test).Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately. Drink plenty of water. Take adequate rest. Maintain healthy diet and lifestyle.
Take care.
