Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
Irregular periods are usually suggestive of anovulatory cycles (menstrual cycles without periodic egg release from ovary). Brown discharge could suggest chances of infection, hormonal changes, endometritis, PCOS etc. Brown discharge is also associated with pregnancy. If pregnancy is suspected (it is possible for you to have occasional ovulation even when not having regular cycles, and you can expect chances of pregnancy if you have been sexually active), you should consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist for thorough examination (to confirm pregnancy related changes/signs in body) and blood/serum HCG level test (to confirm/rule out pregnancy accurately).
If pregnancy gets ruled out, consider requesting your doctor/gynecologist for a vaginal swab/smear test done to confirm/rule out infective causes. Hormonal analysis done would rule out chances of any imbalances. Ultrasound scan done will help to rule out other problems like PID, endometrial problems, PCOS, ovarian cysts etc. Get started on treatment as indicated by examination findings and investigation results. Avoid vaginal douching, use of harsh soap or perfumes in the area. Use loose cotton undergarments and avoid use of tight fitting clothes. Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately. Drink plenty of water. Take adequate rest. Maintain healthy diet and lifestyle. If infective cause is detected, and if you are sexually active, get your partner also treated simultaneously, and avoid having intercourse while being on treatment to prevent chances of re-infection.
Take care.
