Admittedly, I have not yet seen my doctor, but I plan on doing so in the next few weeks. I *think* I have an inguinal hernia that has gotten pretty bad. I have really bad swelling in my front and I think a lot has extended down to my scrotum as it has gotten quite large on one side.

Anyways, I read a lot of scary stories about having the mesh put in during surgery. Lots of lingering pain years after and all that. I'm only 24 and I'd like to live as normal of a life as possible after my surgery.

Are there alternatives to the mesh? Are there any mesh success stories? Is it possible to return to a 100% normal life after a bad inguinal hernial is surgically repaired?

Yes, the alternative to mesh is a pure-tissue repair. The best place to go for this type of repair is the Shouldice Hospital in Canada.

Although it is in Canada, the Shouldice repair technique has been the gold standard in non-mesh repairs for over 40 years.

Don't let distance turn you off to this. You are too young to have to deal with 50+ years of pain from any type of mesh complication. They have a website, google them.
