Thank you for your question on ehealthforum.

Dear Gaurav, you mentioned that your father is suffering from a retina problem, but you have not mentioned symptoms apart from the inability to read. There are various conditions producing retinal problems. The most common problem occurring in older people is age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which is basically a wear and tear mechanism leading to the damage of the retina and decreased vision especially in the central area affecting reading ability.

Considering your father's age, it may likely be AMD, but there are several other problems related to blood vessels and the retina which can decrease vision. AMD is of two types, a dry type where vision is affected and slowly progresses, and another wet type which is associated with bleeding/or/swelling of the retina resulting in sudden deterioration of vision.

The dry type of AMD cannot be treated. The wet type of AMD can be treated to a certain extent based on the extent and severity. The main aim of the treatment in wet AMD is to reduce further deterioration and in certain cases it shows a degree of improvement depending on the location of swelling.

I would suggest that you take your father for the opinion of a medical or surgical retinal specialist for proper diagnosis and management. Hope this is helpful. Thank you.
