Until approximately three days before you ovulate. Some people say as long as a week and it best to err on the side of caution.

For the safe period to be used with any chance of success you must have a very stable and predictable monthly cycle and you must very carefully keep a record of the dates and to establish on what day you usually ovulate on.
A temperature chart is one way or vaginal mucus test strips are another method of checking for ovulation.

If you use the safe period as a method of contraception you must realise it is not foolproof and is only suitable for those couples who wouldn't mind if the woman became pregnant. A deviation in your cycle because of illness or trauma or hormone changes will mean having to begin calculations again and could result in pregnancy.

There are no 100% safe calendar method. There are just safer and less safe days.

You are fertile from about 6 days before you ovulate until the day after ovulation. The other days are considered safe. 95% of all women ovulate between 12 and 16 days before their next period, so determining the safer days will depend on you being regular and predictable. The safest days are from about 7 days before your period, and the first 3 or 4 days of your period.

Using the fertility awareness methods (FAM) or natural family planning methods (NFP) can increase your safety dramatically. You can google this, or look at the free training and phone app provided by fertilityfriend (dot com). This will teach you how to recognize your fertile days by observing your own body.

If you can absolutely not afford to make a baby at this stage, always use birth control.

Your safest days are the 7 days before your period and the first 3 days of your period.

If you have very short cycles (21 days or less), the calculations change.
