Every time I take Zoloft (Sertraline generic is what I take) with Dexedrine (I take Dextroamphetamine tablets Generic) I get overwhelming heartburn that has lasted up to 5 hours before. It is very painful and I have to take up to 40 mg of Pepcid with Pepto Bismol, 2-3 Tums, and sometimes even drinking 1-2 glasses of skim milk to try and help it. The thing is, when I take either of those medications with around 2-3 hours in-between (or so) I only experience minimal (if any) gastric acid reflux.

I find that I do the best when I take the medicines together, but I get really bad heartburn when I do. Is it worth trying a new medicine combination, or is it feasible to always take antacids daily during the times I take the medicines conjunctively (together)? I'm not sure how logical that is to always need antacids and Pepto Bismol to combat the side effects of my psychotropic medicines, but I'm at a loss for how I could remedy this ongoing/burning heartburn (acid reflux) occurrences?

Hello and welcome to EHF,

I appreciate your concern,

Zoloft and dextroamphetamine have totally different effects on human brain, almost opposite to each other, one slow you down while the other is a stimulant,it stimulates the brain to function more efficiently so may be that's why you experience such bad acid reflux from taking them together.

I would suggest, you take them with a few hours gap, however,if you don't want to do that, then you can talk to your doctor to either change the medication for you to try something new and see if it works the same as their combination or recommend you something for the acid reflux. He will most probably prescribe you a PPI,to reduce the stomach acid secretion.

I will not recommend taking antacids on a daily basis with the combination of these drugs without talking to your doctor first.

I hope this is helpful,

Wishing you the best of health
