abnormalities\health issues to me or the baby

User Profile
Hi,
My periods happen usually every 25 days and the last period was on 18th May-2011. After my marriage on 28th May-2011, being unaware that iPill is different from regular contraceptive pill, I have had unprotected sex from 29th May till 4th June. During this period I took iPill on 31th May and 3rd June.
I went through pregnancy test and results confirm that I am pregnant. I also got to know that I now suffer from severe UTI. Sonography done on 27th June indicates no heartbeat in the fetus.

My concerns:
I am concerned of the side effect of iPill(twice within 3 days) and UTI on the growth of baby I carry.
My Questions:
1-When shall I expect heartbeat to begin in it? I somewhere read that it should start within 22-28 days of fertilization.
2-Please guide me on the possible abnormalities\health issues to me or the baby and also the probablity.
3-Would you suggest abortion, as a better choice, considering this is my first and wanted baby?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
Emergency contraceptives usually work in preventing pregnancy if taken within 48 hours of unprotected intercourse. Repeated use can harm your hormonal pattern and cause period and bleeding abnormalities. No severe anomalies or side effects on the fetus have been reported after use of emergency contraceptive use. What was the gestational age at the time of ultrasound scan?
Coming to the answers for your queries:
1-When shall I expect heartbeat to begin in it? I somewhere read that it should start within 22-28 days of fertilization. ---- The early ultrasound scans can detect fetal heartbeat distinctly at about 6-8 weeks of gestation (usually with transvaginal scan). You can consider repeating the ultrasound scan after about 2-4 weeks of last scan.
2-Please guide me on the possible abnormalitieshealth issues to me or the baby and also the probablity. ----- Be in regular follow-up with your treating gynecologist. UTI’s are common during pregnancy. Get started on appropriate treatment (with medications that are safe to be used during pregnancy) to treat the infection.
3-Would you suggest abortion, as a better choice, considering this is my first and wanted baby? ----- The fetal anomalies are not detected until about 16-20 weeks of gestation. If the scan done at that time detects anomalies or fetal defects, then you can discuss about abortion or medical termination of pregnancy (if defects detected will compromise the quality of life for the baby).
Be in regular follow-up with your treating gynecologist. Discuss about further possibilities. If in doubt, get serial HCG levels done. Doubling up of the hormone levels in 72 hours will show that pregnancy is going on smoothly. If levels are not adequate, and spotting/brown discharge is absent, then external hormonal supplements should be considered to be started to help with preventing miscarriage/threatened abortion. Take adequate rest. Drink plenty of water. Maintain healthy diet. Avoid any heavy work. Avoid having intercourse during first trimester. Avoid lifting heavy objects and climbing stairs or standing for long periods.
Take care.
