According to the symptoms you described (upper abdominal pain, vomiting and taste of blood), your son might be experiencing inflammation of the stomach and upper intestinal tract (gastritis and duodenitis). The “taste of blood” he is experiencing might also explain the blood in the stool, which is one of the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (although it is unclear from the description whether the blood in the stool was visible OR if the blood was an occult sample detected with laboratory stool tests). However, it is highly unlikely that the z-pack caused these symptoms.
Moreover, the lack of diarrhea and/or constipation indicates that the problem is more likely located in the upper gastrointestinal tract. An inappropriate diet regimen and the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori are one of the possible causes for gastritis, combined with acid reflux and/or the presence of an ulcer. If this is the case, his doctor might run some laboratory tests to detect H. pylori and if positive, prescribe an adequate treatment. You could also try, as an alternative medicine, to relieve his symptoms with probiotics. You might consider second opinion by an internist or a gastroenterohepatologist.
