we are trying to potty train our 3 yr old boy. he was going well but now has stopped wanting to pee in pot, often holding in pee for the whole day and only wetting or using pot as last resort, he does not complain of having any pain. could this be harming his kidneys??
First and foremost, the possibility of urinary infections need to be ruled out. Presence of pain and burning sensation may be the cause of your son, trying to avoid or postpone urination.
The other possibility might be harsh methods of potty training, which might have caused your son, to think that urinating is wrong and associated with shame. Hence he might be trying to avoid urination at the most.
Long term periods of holding urine result in urinary infections and kidney damage, hence proper steps should be taken at the earliest.
You might consult with your pediatrician, who can examine your son and provide proper counseling and help, to improve his behavior and responses.
