Hello! First post and looking for some advice, or at least sympathy Smile

My boyfriend and I have been dating for over a year now and have been sexually active since the beginning. During the first few months we had sex very often, multiple times a week. After about four months with him and after years of going without a yeast infection, I got one. I absolutely HATE OTC treatments, they seem to just aggravate the little yeasty baddies and they come on ten times stronger than in the beginning. So I looked to "alternative medicine". I tried yogurt (orally and topically) and even garlic as a suppository. Those seemed to hold them off for a little while, but never permanently. So I took the Diflucan pill and it disappeared like magic!

Alas, my time of peace did not last long. A few months later it was back. And again, Diflucan came to my rescue. Since then I've had a few "scares," meaning that I'll get that dry, uncomfortable feeling that always coincides with the yeasties, followed by some itchiness and slight cottage cheesing, but it appears fall back after a day or two.

So you may be wondering where my boyfriend comes into this picture. After the first few infections and scares I started making a connection to intercourse (we seldom use a condom, I'm on the pill) and the yeast problem because many times when we have sex I start to show symptoms shortly after. This is a problem for two reasons: a.) It causes me to be very apprehensive about having sex because I am beginning to associate it with the yeasties and b.) I'm getting !@#&@ing yeast infections!

I know that yeast infections can be caused by many different things, but does anyone else have a problem that relates? Any advice? I'm making an appointment with the Gyno tomorrow but I don't have too much faith in this situation.

Well, first...what did the Gyno say?

Yes, sexual partners can transmit yeast infection back and forth to one another. While women are more likely carriers, about 10% of men also experience, give and receive YI's. Does your boyfriend have any symptoms like itchiness, irritation or spots on the top of his penis (or under the head)? Do you notice any smell coming from his penis?

Utlimately, I believe the systemic and chronic yeast infections are lifestyle issues. We've got to change what we eat in order to clean them up.

But what did your Gynecologist say?

yeah I have always had a problem with yeast infections and sex. I think sometimes men can carry some yeast on their shaft but also I think it may be due to an irritation from sperm? I rarely have problems if I have protected sex, it always happens when I have unprotected sex (which isnt often I must add!) but yeah, I don't think sperm and a lady's natural yeast mix very well lol. I would say, use protection for a while and give yourself some time to fully recover from the infection. Get on top of your diet, eat tonnes of veges and eat loads of natural yoghurt, build up your immune system because recurring yeast infections can be a sign of having a low immune system and excercise also helps of course.

I did a little more research on this and learned that around 10-15% of males experience penile yeast infections. However, most yeast infections are not spread sexually. Men can be treated for yeast infection with an antifungal cream or ointment.

Any woman who experiences symptoms of a vaginal infection for the first time should visit a doctor b/c vaginal discharge and discomfort can also be caused by STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia or trichomoniasis.

Also, there is a diagnosis for women with 4 yeast infection per year which is called recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC)...doctors still don't know how to treat it. Sad
