I'm seventeen years old and had my first period when I was eleven. Since then it's never been regular-- I rarely ever get it. Right now I could get it tomorrow or six months from now. I have no idea. However, when I do get it, it's normal. I've never experienced a change in the amount of bleeding or its color. I went to a gynecologist, but it was an awkward visit. It went really fast and she said I was fine. I KNOW irregular periods are normal, especially for younger girls, but that should only be up to three years, right? I've never had sex, nor have I taken any medicine sex-related. The only thing I've found that may be connected is that I have more body hair than most girls. It's not extremely bad, but it does feel a bit unnatural. Is this some kind of hormone imbalance? Or could it be this condition I read about called PCOS? My main concern, as strange as it sounds, is that it'll hurt my chances of having a baby in the future. I know I'm only seventeen, but I've always wanted to be a mom. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You rarely have a period and you have excess body hair. If you're underweight or are a serious athlete, that could be the problem.
Some athletes skip periods or have their periods cease altogether. Very thin women can stop having periods; they also grow more hair as a result of the low weight.
If it's not either of these, you may want to go on birth control to regulate your periods and get you back to having a period every month. However, this won't help you when you decide to start a family.
You do have some of the symptoms of PCOS but weight gain is also a common symptom of it so it's important to know your weight.
