My 8 year old daughter has started waking up coughing and gasping for air in the night. This is the third night in a row and im starting to worry and cannot sleep. Both her and her sister has a bit of a cough but this has never happened before and her sister is fine at night. Ive read that this can be caused by fear or nightmares and her granda (my dad) whom she lived with upto 1 year ago and still sees everyday has terminal cancer and has recently took to the bed so im wondering if this could have something to do with it...

Hello and welcome to e health forum. â

The description of gasping and coughing could be due to respiratory infections like pharyngitis, sinusitis with post nasal drip, bronchitis or it could be due to asthma ( if wheezing is present).

Though night mares can present with sleep disturbances, persistant coughing and gasping is less likely to be due to that.

You might consult with a doctor for a examination , proper assessment and specific treatment of her condition.
