Q: 5year old seeing colored spots
asked by: mommie on March 6th, 2008

My 5year old wakes us up 5 out of 7 nights and tells us she is having nitemares. Recently she said she was having nitemares during the day. We explained you have nitemares when your sleeping. She becomes very upset and panics during these episodes. When we asked her who was in her dream, she explained no one. She went on to tell us she sees colored spots and they move very fast around her head and they won't stop and it scares her. These episodes are happening 2 to 3 times per day. I called my doctor and explained he thinks it is behavior but I am not convinced. Why would she wake in the middle of the nite for attention? I am so concerned it could be something more.

Dear mommie, when you said that you called the doctor, is it a GP or a pediatric doctor? My advise is to see a pediatric doctor as pediatricians are more verse in children, good luck pm me if you need to talk - Hart74.

I don't think she is making this up at all. A pediatrician would be good, but I think also an optometrist is in order. You may also want to have her go in for an MRI. I hope it isn't as bad as all that, but with kids you can never been too careful because they can't tell you exactly what they are feeling.

Good luck and keep us updated!

I was referring to her just doing things for attention as the OP asked. Sometimes kids do make up things that seem to be really terrible because they need more attention. But it would be really hard for her at her age to purposefully awaken herself at night just so that she could tell made up stories. I don't think it's the case of waking up for attention here, it's a real problem.

colored spots
searching "seeing colored spots" on this health form site. There are many other instances of this (minus the nightmares, but perhaps the other kids just aren't afraid).

Re coloured spots,
Hi, my son (13 now), had this from a toddler. He also suffers from exhaustion and regular nosebleeds.I asked to be referred to a peadiatrician as the GP was constantly dismissive, even though it was clearly exhausting for my son.He slept 20 hours a day. He was diagnosed with migraine which can come with auras, smells or sounds, (like ringing ears or buzzing). Unfortunately the medication made him violent and bad tempered so he has to sleep it off with regular painkillers which do not really touch the pain of migriane. He still sees the lights all the time, nothing wrong with his vision.Hes now 13. I still have had no explanation.
