Hi.
I just started birth control for the first time. I was prescribed Yasmin. My period for the month of May had a start day of Saturday the 9th and ended around Thursday the 14th. I then began my birth control on Monday the 18th with my first pill, a few days after my period was over. Today is June 9th and I took my first sugar pill yesterday (on the Monday of the 4th week) and will be taking them until this upcoming Sunday, starting a new pack on Monday. Should I be expecting my period ? I have taken every pill every day and on time, maybe on some days within a few minutes of each other. If I was not on birth control I WOULD be expecting my period today but is it possible that it can come on a different day during the sugar pill week but should still be coming ? What happens if it does not come during the sugar pill week ? Could I get it when I start taking the active pills again, and if so, what would that mean ? MOST importantly, can I have condom-free sex with my STD-free partner during this "sugar pill" week without getting pregnant -- atleast while I have not gotten my period ? Another question I have is I know the sugar pills are supposed to be "reminder pills" but do I actually need to take them if I remember ? Can I skip them ? Or even take them at a different time of the day ?

Your period should come any day now. Even if it does not come on this week, you should continue to take the pill as directed. it may be late because of the small gap between the last day of your period and the day you began taking the pill. Just to be on the safe side, and to ease your mind, I think you should use backup protection. As for the reminder pill, physiologically speaking, you don't have to take it and it does not matter what time of day you take it. However, you are shooting yourself in the foot by ignoring these pills or taking them at a different time of day than normal. They are there for a purpose- to reduce the chance of you forgetting to take the pill/ taking the pill at a different time during the day. You should take ALL of the pills exactly as directed.
