I was also completely scared of central anesthesia although I did not smoke. Before the surgery, the anesthesiologist explained to me that they would put a tube into my throat just after I fell asleep and would take it out before waking me up. I do not know if they put the tube in because I woke up without it and without any sensation that something was in my throat. You can look at my whole story under “Inguinal Hernia Repair Recovery Diary”. I am sure you shared your concerns with your doctor and you can confirm it with the anesthesiologist. If you are still concerned, you can call the nurse or the doctor and get their reassurance which is better than sleepless nights.
