Q: Withdrawal from self-harm

Has anyone else suffered from withdrawal from self-harm, and if so, is there any way to cope with it.
I cut for a while 5 years back, but sometimes a get a withdrawal pang where my scars start burning. If i try to ignore it gets worse and stays like that for a day. Because of this i have slipped back into the habit of cutting more than once and i am not sure if i will ever be able to quit for good.

Honey I just read your post..I am sorry you are having this need again..Next time you get that urge try using a rubber band..It will sting but it will not be a cut..

Never say never--prayer works wonders..I know it's hard but it can be done..

WHat brought on this new pain to start you back cutting? k

Usually it is any emotional trauma makes my scars start burning, then i just get distracted.
For me love is working wonders in trying to to work towards quitting.
But i will definitely try the rubber band trick next time, thanks Smile

i sometimes feel the same way, like most addictions relapses do happen, but you can't get the easy way out like nicotine patches. when i first started relapsing i used to cut, then i used rubber-bands, then i started to rub my wrist where i cut. the best thing is to find a friend to talk to when ever you want to cut and basically distract yourself until you stop wanting to cut. it gets easier the more you resist.

self-injury withdrawal
I think they are starting to retract the rubber band thing as a healthy "substitute". I just happened to be looking for an answer to your question and I think kitheryne has the right idea. find someone to talk to. I'm trying to find info about withdrawls because the chemical that is released when you are injured calms you down and is sort of the organic form of a drug that would do the same soooo it wouldn't surprise me if , yes, you can have withdrawals. again though, that's the answer I'm looking for also. lol. good luck. I know its not easy.

i know what ur feeling. i used to cut for about 8 years...i stopped because i got pregnant. but yes i know how u feel. cutting is like a drug. its an addiction. i really felt antsy, irritable, lashed out at ppl, didnt know what to do with myself...my son is my motivation to keep from doing it. i dont think the urge will ever go away. i think were always gonna want to cut...but u just gotta find that one reason not too. that one thing thats gonna stop u every time. every time i wanna do it, i just look at my beautiful baby...and it just all goes away. it was hard at first but now its a lot easier. still hard, but its getting easier.
