Wisdom teeth and dry socket Posted: 03-15-08 22:45pm
So I just got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out
tuesday and have a few questions.
1) I spit out 2 of my clots today, but
it's been 4 days, should i be worried?
2) Is dizzyness a symptom of anything
horribly bad like dry socket, i've been
really dizzy and off balance.
3)did anyone else feel really odd and feel
like everything was off for a while?
4)my doctor forgot to mention that being
on birth control increases your risk of
getting dry socket, does anyone know how
much it increases your risk?
5) other than pain (i've been on pain meds
taking them religiously every 4 hours, so
i pretty much feel a dull ache in my head
neck and back teeth) what are syptoms of
dry socket?
6) I don't think i have TMJ, but it's been
4 days now and the left side of my jaw
feels like it's not sitting right and i
can hardly open my mouth, but the right
side feels fine (it's like when you wind a
screw to tight, that's what the left side
feels like) is this normal or should i get
it checked out? thanks!

ok you need to get into the dentist. i got
this --there is probably some infection.
dont worry about the jaw pain. its going
to take about 2-3 weeks for it to feel
better. you have a lot of swelling and you
arent going to be able to open. this is
completely normal. all the doctor would do
would be to tell you to give yourselfe
time to heal.
do go in and tell them about the sockets
and the dizzyness. i had an infection in
one of my sockets and i had all those
symptoms. as for the birth controll i don
t know. were you sucking on a straw or
anything like that? that would give any
one dry socket.

you will know if you have a dry socket
because area is very very painful and when
water touch the socket you will see stars
from pain ,you feel a stinky odor and bad
taste from the area ,other things you
mention are normals and would go in like a
week if it does not improve and you keep
feeling bad go to your dentist

Hi, musicdiva1331.
Did you bleed after popping the clots? If
so, they may have clotted over, again. If
not, you may want to call your oral
surgeon and see if s/he wants to take a
look. At worst, they'll pack it up with
medicated packing to help keep it clean
and help reclot it.
I was told by the folks in my oral
surgeon's office that you would definitely
know if you had dry socket; they said that
one woman claimed the pain was worse than
giving birthand that if I wasn't in pain
so badly that I wanted to curl up and cry,
it likely wasn't dry socket! =0)
As for the dizziness and 'off' feeling, I
had my wisdom teeth out over a month ago,
and I have also been experiencing some
oddness like yours. The dizziness isn't
'spinning' persay, but it almost feels
like my head is 'disconnected'... I've had
this odd 'light' feeling sometimes, like
I'm not necessarily a part of things,
especially when I'm sitting up very
straight at a computer. At one point, I
looked down at my hands while typing and
they felt like they were 20 feet away from
my eyes! I also had some issues with
pressure in the ear/temple area (not pain,
just odd pressure, like my ear was popped
and I couldn't 'unpop' it...). Does any of
that sound at all familiar? Mine is still
going on, so I wonder if you and I are
experiencing similar symptoms.
In regards to the jaw, I can't say for
sure what you're dealing with, but I can
tell you that it was a good 2 weeks before
I was able to open my mouth all the way (I
wasn't having pain; luckily, I had no pain
whatsoever after my wisdom tooth surgery,
but it was 'tight' feeling, like I
couldn't stretch the back of my mouth open
all the way).
If you're at all concerned, though, I'd go
ahead and at least talk to your surgeon
over the phone. If s/he thinks any of it
is concerning, s/he'll have you come in to
take a look and, if not, s/he'll at least
be able to reassure you.
Good luck and let us know how things are
going!

yeah, turns out it was the stitches as
well that i spit out, because the other
two came out today, so i'm hoping and
praying that nothing goes terribly wrong
before i go in for my follow up cause i
unfortunately have no time to see them!
i'm not in pain, but my mouth definitely
tastes gross and it smells awful, but
apparently that's normal. I discovered why
the jaw tightness happens. it's called
trismus. Because wisdom teeth removal is
what is called an "injurious surgery" the
body reacts instinctively to protect it,
the muscles in the jaw swell and lock to
cushion the TMJ because it's so close to
the wisdom teeth. it did go away slightly
when the stitches came out too. so
hopefully i'll be ok and won't get an
infection or dry socket. the dizziness is
still present though and i'm really
worried about that. i have weird reactions
to medications (not like allergies, but
just...strange) so i wasn't sure if it was
the pain meds. hopefully i'll find out and
then i can give answers for future
queries!
