Your baby might cry for a lot of reasons. First, you have to check if there is a medical condition that causes the crying and needs to be treated.
You might want to visit a pediatrician for this. The crying might be due to pain, but this pain should be throughout all the day instead of only at night. The pain may originate from various conditions. It might be related to spasms of the intestines that might be painful to the baby. If the intestines are full with gasses and the bowel motility is still not regulated well, then the gasses might distend the bowels and cause the pain. The pain might also be caused by a hernia (inguinal hernia being one of the most frequent in boys).
If no medical condition is found then the crying is probably a sign of discomfort. What causes the discomfort might sometimes be very difficult to detect. Change in the surrounding temperature, being hungry, asking for attention, being overwhelmed with attention might all cause babies crying.
You might want to keep a close look and try to detect what actually is changed when your baby starts to cry. Also detecting changes that calm it and using them frequently might save you a few hours for sleep.
