Who should decide whether to resuscitate a patient when he/she collapsed? The Dr in charge or patient family?

That decision is usually covered in a living will, something everyone should have. A living will is a piece of paper with instructions on it in the event of an impending death and how far someone should go to resuscitate someone. In my living will, I have a DNR order if I am unable to be successfully resuscitated after 20 minutes. I also have my husband acting in my name on the living will, meaning he makes all decisions for me if I am unable to. In the event someone does not have a living will, I believe that the doctors should inform the family on all possible outcomes. And then let the family decide. But I am not sure on the laws of this. I do know the laws state that living wills must be carried out but I don't know the laws for someone who does not have a living will made out.

Doesn't everyone get resuscitated unless there is an advance directive stating otherwise?

i'm pretty sure you're right
and then there is paper work I believe that state whether or not you'd want to be put on life support if thats what it takes, like feeding tube and such...
there was a case forever ago in florida..gosh I forget the name but i had to study it in school where this woman was put on life support..she was supposedly completely brain dead and had tube feeding...her husband wanted the tube pulled and to just let her go...so it was done but the parents of the girl PLEADED to have the tube put back in(they had disconnected her food and water tube i believe so let her just go naturally that way) so they put it back in after a few days...after years of fighting about whether to keep her alive or pull the plug I believe the husband finally won and the tube was pulled and she passed away..i think the womans name was terry? it was an interesting case...bush(floridas govenor) had actually passed a law or something about the case I think...i forget the details..anyway..interesting case...you definitely need to express what you would like done though
