What to expect after a bad ankle break and surgry

i broke my ankle in 3 spots. Had to have surgry, 2 plates, 11 screws and a wire. I had surgry 3 weeks ago, 3 days after surgry I had my post op appt check up to clear me to fly (since I did this on vacation). After arriving home I had problems finding a dr to see me had to go to er to have stitches removed and they put me in air cast. They had some difficulty doing so, since when intern had reset my splint at post op appt they didn't get it at the 90 degree angle. So they had to gently force into the flat position (it took them almost an half hour) to set it into air cast. My question, every since then (2 days ago) I have been experiencing an intense burning pain that I had not been feeling before. This pain comes and goes. I'm thinking it's just irritated nerves from them forcing my foot into position it had not been in fir 3 weeks but am unsure. Is this pain normal?
