what to eat with throat cancer ?
Posted: 07-01-08 07:39am

Hello all i'm new to this forum. I was wondering if anyone had any answers to my question. I've been searching the web for about an hour now and have not found anywhere anyone having this same problem.
He has throat cancer and is undergoing radiation . Hes less than half way through his radiation and hes having alot of problems with mouth sores and pain. He also cannot eat anything other than pretty much cream of wheat.
Weve tried yogurt ( he can't eat this because it burns his mouth.) chicken broth based soup (says it has an awful taste and hurts his mouth... this is while it was cooled down.) Pretty much anything burns his mouth or just tastes awful! Does anyone have any ideas about what he could eat? Any suggestions are welcome! I also read something about using honey to soothe mouth sores... Does anyone know anything about this? Please and thank you !

Mouth sores, tender gums, and a sore throat or esophagus often result from radiation therapy.
He needs to eat foods cold or at room temperature, soft, soothing foods, such as ice cream, milkshakes, baby food, soft fruits (bananas and applesauce), mashed potatoes,
puddings, and gelatin.
It's important to avoid irritating, acidic foods and juices, such as tomato and citrus (orange, grapefruit, and lemon); spicy or salty foods.

When the mouth sores are severe enough than it is necessary the treatment to be delayed or the dosage to be reduced in order to allow the mouth to heal.

Has he asked his doctor for meds to ease the pain caused by the mouth sores?

Don't you just LOVE MandMS? She is like an encyclopedia! My father basically his last years lived off Ensure. Its a type of drink wiht vitamins and minerals, etc. things to which your body needs. Also, what about Gator Aid or Power Aid etc for the electrolytes? I'd go for the all natural nothing added baby foods. They are relatively inexpensive, try a jar of a meat with added vegetables. I would also find a physican that would have mercy on this poor guy and give him something for his pain. I seriously would tell him to reconsider and find a sympathetic doctor. I ahve several wonderful ones, so I know there are some out there. Hope your friend recovers and feels better soon.

Chemotherapy and radiation kill rapidly dividing cells, a characteristic of most of cancers.
The cells lining the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract, also, divide rapidly.
For this reason, the GI tract is particularly susceptible to damage by chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

He can start using saline mouthwashes 2-3 times per day, because this has shown to be effective in relieving mouth sores and reducing discomfort associated with them, until the cells regenerate themselves, which takes about 7 to 14 days.
He can ask for the new treatment with Kepivance, drug that mimics naturally produced substance (keratinocyte growth factor) that stimulates the growth of cells which are involved in protecting the lining of the mouth.

Best wishes!
