What should I expect witb an abortion?

User Profile
Hi, I am currently almost 3 months pregnant and am probably going to get an abortion. I am scared and unsure of possible consequences, and am hoping someone who has had one before could give me some advise.
I am worried something may happen during the surgical procedure that could impact my future ability to have children. Does anyone know the chances of this?
Also, I have a low threshold for pain,( plus I think being conscious during this would freak me out). (Just thinking about it creeps me out). So I am thinking of getting either a deep IV sedation or general anaesthesia during the procedure. Has anyone used 1 of these methods before? If so, do you feel anything, any pain, are you conpletly unconscious? And do u know how much more expensive it is to use one of these pain relief methods?
I appreciate any feedback on this, I need to do it soon, & am so scared.
Also, what types of feelings did you have afterwards? Is it really hard to deal with? You know, like thinking what if?.
P.S. the main reason I am having to so this is for medical reasons to protect the unborn child. I am on some medication that would not be good for the baby & I have to take it.
Thanks again
- Jessamy

Did you have general anaesthesia or deep IV sedation, do u know?
Did they put a tube down your throat to breath for you? Or just the IV that put u to sleep?
I actually just found I am only 6 weeks Smile

Thanks for your replys.
Im glad to hear their was no tube down the throat. I was told that is how they do it for general anaesthesia, but maybe your way was different.
Im thinking of just getting regional anaesthesia with IV sedation, so I am out, but can breath by myself. I guess that's where they give u an epidermal (or some other nerve blocker) plus sedation to put u asleep.
Do you remember the possible choices they gave you, (for anaesthesia) ?
And did you get a chance to speak w/ the anesthesiologist about all the pain relief options/anaesthesia before your surgery? Or was it right before- like on the same day as your surgery?
Well we'lll see....my appt is this Wed. Kinda scared, but I will be happy to have it done with.

Thanks. Yeah that's what most people have been saying..that you usually see a Dr. &/or anesthesiologist right b4 the procedure on the sane day. Seems kinda weird to me honestly, that you aren't given a chance to think about the possible anaesthesia methods for a couple days first. Not to mention meet the Dr first. I mean what if u don't like em, or they seem unprofessional. Yeah, of course you can always just walk out, but if they already scheduled you & the Dr & the anesthesiologist, u feel a little inclined to stay. It just seems like pressure is put on you to go through with it, even if u don't like the Dr. (And Im not saying I'm all anal about having a "perfect Dr.", I just think u should be able to meet them 1st). Its a pretty invasive procedure - there's a lot they could mess up if not properly done.
For example, this place I went- the sonagram technition who was giving me a vaginal sonagram, took a personal phone call while she was in the middle of giving it to me. I mean she had one hand in my kuter & the other on the phone! Talking to her daughter about something not important. I just thought that was weird. I know they've done it a million times, but I haven't.
Anyways, Ill let ya know. My appts coming up soon. I really don't want to do this, its not the right time for me to have a baby. I just can't.
Thanks again for your advise.

I just had one yesterday and they gave me aton of pills to take including three that soften your cervix which made me feel like the beginnings of labor(I have a 6 month old so I remember what that feels lke) but it wasn't painful to me..there were two other girls who were complaining of their stomachs hurting but they both said when they came out that the procedure made their stomach pain go away. Honestly it isn't bad at all, they put an iv into the inside of my elbow and put a few things in it including valium and pain killers so I could feel what was going on but it didn't hurt at all. I didn't even notice the doctorcome in the roombecause I was so sleepy, I just laid back and had my eyes closed because I couldn't keep them open. Then the nurses put extra pads on my underwear and helped my get dressed and I sat ina really comfortable recliner and fell asleep. I was sooooo scared to go through it but honestly it was fine, it wasn't even as bad as a regular pap smear because they drug you up so much haha. And right now I just have light bleeding as if I am on my period...I didn't even need the pain killers afterward, it just felt like regular menstrual cramping.
