My vaginal opening has been hurting ever since I have inserted a tampon when it wasn't during a heavy flow. The pain is a burning sensation like the same pain during a UTI, except it's not only when I have to urinate. I'm wondering if it is a yeast infection, and what kind of over the counter treatment I can get?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
The symptoms that you describe suggest possibility of vaginal infection, vaginal injury etc. The exact cause can only be made out after careful evaluation. Consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist at the earliest for thorough examination and a vaginal swab/smear test done to confirm/rule out infective causes. Get started on treatment as indicated by examination findings and investigation results. Avoid vaginal douching, or use of harsh soap or perfumes in the area. Use loose cotton undergarments and avoid use of tight fitting clothes. Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately. Drink plenty of water. Take adequate rest. Maintain healthy diet and lifestyle. If infective cause is detected, and if you are sexually active, get your partner also treated simultaneously, and avoid having intercourse while being on treatment to prevent chances of re-infection.
Take care.
