Q: TMJ symptoms

I have been having extremly bad headaches, my jaw hurts and I have a lot of ear pain and pressure. Are these signs of TMJ. I do not really have any popping or weird sounds when I open my jaw and I dont have any trouble opening my mouth. The jaw pain is more just sharp pains at my jaw line and almost feels like a toothache.

When did this start, and did it get worse or better with time? Please give us as many details as possible as it is very hard to tell more. Did you have braces as a kid? Any tooth allighment problem? Sinus problem? Have you seen ENT doctor or oral surgeon?
Welcome Katrina! Hang in there, we know it's not easy.

Hi Katrina,
I'd recommend first getting your teeth checked out completely to make sure there's no abscess or anything, OR, that your wisdom aren't trying to come in, etc. Have you been checked out by a dentist to see if you grind or clench your teeth at night? This can definitely cause the symptoms you mention without popping of the jaw.

A lot of force is used when eating and your muscles may be rebelling. For the time being, eat only softer foods, no gum chewing or anything the like. Use lots of MOIST heat and try talking less. Ibuprofen tends to be a better pain reliever. Add Magnesium to your daily diet. It can help reduce any night-time clenching. Watch your posture especially when in front of a computer. Check out nismat.org/ptcor/tmj for basic information and pictures about TMJ, posture, etc.

God bless...
Carol

I went to the dentist 7 months ago and they didn't reflect anything except for a few fillings that i had to have replaced, but the pain was happening at that time as well. It seems to come in spurts, it will feel better for a week or so and then it comes back again. I guess I can make another dentist appointment just to make sure. I think it is possible that I do clench my jaw in my sleep. How do I keep from doing that? I did have braces as a kid, I feel like I get allergies a lot, but as far as sinus problems, I just had a cat scan done and they said that my sinus passages were clear, what is an ENT doctor?

an ent doctor is an ear nose and throat specialist. a dentists visit gone awry can cause tmj. you may want to ask your dentist to make a splint for you to wear at night so that you can put some space between your teeth so that less damage is done when you attempt to clench.

if you need to find a good doctor let me know
