Can someone explain what the icons that are moving against severl threads mean please?

The most common one is a bell, apparently ringing.

I've looked everywhere and cannot find an answer to this.

Looks to me like they indicate a "hot thread" (one with a lot of activity).

That's sort of my guess too but they must know why it is there don't you think? These threads do have a lot of responses which usually indicates to me mass confusion and many differing opinions. In which case it is not of much use to the poster. Just my feeling.
