I have been suffering from extreme fatique for over a year. I have had low ferritin (11) for years and can only seem to raise it slightly with supplements. The latest abnormality on my blood test was an elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) at 11.8. Could there be any connection between the low ferritin and high MPV and what types of additional testing should I consider? I have also been having excessive sweating (day and night) and higher than normal blood pressure. I have always been very healthy and active so this change is worrying me. I am discussing a visit to a hematologist with my doctor as the next step. Does this sound like a logical next step?

what is the 11.8 representative of.

I have an over 800 platelet level and an 11 ferritin.

Exhausted etc. Just started an iron pill.
What is your next step?

afrance - 11.8 is representative of the average size of the platelets or mean platelet volume (mpv). It is separate from the actual number of platelets. You can have low, normal or high platelet levels and have an abnormal platelet volume. I was just worried because mine went up so quickly. I have a follow up with an oncologist/hematologist tomorrow. he ran some additional blood work and is looking at my cells under a scope. He actually advised me to take an additional iron supplement to help with the ferritin levels. I currently take 36 mg daily. He told me to add another 29 mg. Do you take iron supplements? I haven't had much luck with them raising my ferritin level. Hopefully I will get some answers after my visit tomorrow and I will post any helpful info.
