Q: Weight gain while injured

Hi, I'm a 19 yr old athlete and freshman in college. I'm 5'6" and currently 227lbs. Im usually 180. I throw the shot put and discus, but recently fractured my spine. I'm fully mobile but it hurts doing certain things. My doctor has told me absolutely no activity other than walking to class. during this time i have gained about 50 pounds and am getting desperate and depressed about it. I eat smaller portions b/c of my lack of activity, but b/c I can't exercise I'm scared it will end up more than I can lose. I have always been overweight and have tried dieting but I only seem to want more when I do. Exercise felt like my only option. How can I maintain my weight/ lose weight so when I can be fully active I wont be so far behind? Please help!

Extremely eHealthy
walking to class isn't going to do much..so if walking isn't damaging to you then get to the gym and get on a treadmill and walk for a good 30 minutes..try to walk quickly if you can to get your heart rate up..also are you watching what you're eating..its good you're eating smaller portions but what are you eating smaller portions of? try to stick to lean meats and lots of fruits and veggies...if you want a snack go for an apple and peanut butter instead of a snickers..we all know whats healthy and what isn't..its up to you to make that choice

I understand you are having weight gain issues due to inactivity because of a spine problem. Proper diet and exercise are the #1 ways to control weight. Since exercise is not an option at this point you must focus on diet. Try utilizing a low-glycemic index diet. This type of "diet" is not actually a diet (like the kind that you "go on", get results and then stop), but rather a lifestyle change. Therefore, with this type of lifestyle you are choosing not only healthy foods, but the proper portions as well. Do some research on low-glycemic index eating and you will be amazed at how easy it is to stay healthy with this way of eating. A good program that teaches this is called "Transitions". I have personally gone through this course, not to lose weight but to learn it. If you would like to know where the classes are held in your area you may email me and I will find one for you.
Hope this helps.
