Hi, My girlfriend is 16 weeks pregnant and she has not seen a doctor yet for her prenatal visits. Is it still safe to start attending them at between 17-19 weeks? What vitamins supplements can she buy over the counter while still waiting to be attended??

She can buy prenatal vitamins at the drugstore. She should see her doctor ASAP. Why hasn't she been yet?

Hi Mabel, thanks for reply. She has not seen a doctor yet because our public hospitals are always over crowded thus they keep on sending her back without seeing a doctor.

prenatal care
she'll be fine...im now 8 1/2 months pregnant (34 weeks) and i couldnt get into the doctor until i was about 20-22 weeks along. i asked the doctor about me not having prenatal care for the first half of my pregnancy when i had finally got in to see her she said as long as i wasnt doing anything to harm my body and i was eating the right food and drinking plenty of water i would be fine. she also mentioned i could have taken regular women's vitamins as well. so just keep that in mind. hope this helps!

16 weeks no medical treatment? If the hospital is her only means then get their when their doors open. An extremely prudent decision to take prenatal vitamins! A healthy diet containing all food groups and plenty of water. The earlier weeks are just as important to the baby because that is when the developing is done. I really hope medical treatment can be provided soon for your friend.

it's not required to take pre-natals. i have a very weak and upset stomach and i could not handle them at all and now all i do is take 2 flintstone vitamins a day, and an iron pill every other day, but i've had low iron all my life so that might not be a necessity

Serenitylove prenatal vitamins are extremely important. The baby takes nutrients from the mother. It is true some mothers cannot tolerate the vitamins because they are to harsh on their stomach. However, you yourself said you are taking flintstones, which are supplying you vitamins. This is why some women have poor teeth during pregnancy and look like someone just dug them up. What you cannot obtain from vitamins you must from the basic food groups.

your grandma didnt take prenatal vitamins or much prenatal care and im sure your parents turned out just fine.

i didnt take vitamins or have any prenatal care until i was 6.5 months along with my first baby. he is healthy and quite attractive! he is now 7.5 years old and has only been to the doctor twice in his life... and both of those times were for rashes.

taking prenatal pills and having ultrasounds doesnt mean youre going to have a healthy baby. and not taking prenatal pills or having ultrasounds doesnt mean your baby will be unhealthy.

as long as your lady-friend is taking care of herself then the baby should be fine. everyone now-a-days is just sooo damn paranoid because we have the technology to find out if there is something 'wrong' with our baby... thats the only reason people push for prenatal vitamins and doctor visits. if youre going to have a miscarriage or if youre going to have a baby with birth defects, it would have happened regardless of how many pills you took or how many doctor visits you had.

Our generations before us? First of all all the preservatives that go into our food now wasn't an issue back then. Prenatal care is extremely important. I concur that all the technology now is not necessary but on the the other hand deformities are caught much sooner now. The most important thing is to maintain a healthy diet for both mother and child.

if youre child is going to be deformed... its going to be deformed. prenatal care cannot PREVENT deformities... it can only diagnose them. thats why prenatal care isnt as important as people think. if your baby has down syndrome, it would have been born like that regardless of how good/poor your prenatal care was. the only reason i go to my prenatal appointments is so my insurance covers ultrasounds... thats really the only thing im interested in: seeing my baby.

the generation before us also was thought smoking and drinking was okay during pregnancy... and 'cured' their meat by smothering it in salt and letting it sit in their barn. they also didnt know that the 'milk' they were drinking was primarily just chalk water. they might not have had as many preservatives... but they sure as heck had a lot more disgusting things put in to their bodies that could have harmed their baby.

You are right deformities can and will happen with or without prenatal care. However, we do not have as many stillbirths as they did then and mothers can be closely watched to detect gestational diabetes, anemia, hypertension, etc. I am a country girl and was raised on goat and cow milk, not chalk water. Medical Technology has come along way. Some not so good but some are for the better. Today we have women that live on soda, TV dinners, chips, or nothing at all. We have babies born addicted because of Mother's habits. Society has changed tremendously. I for one am thankful that prenatal care has changed.

i am thankful it has changed too. i, personally, go to every prenatal visit, nutrionist meeting, ultrasound, i get all of my bloodwork done....

my whole point isnt that i think prenatal care is worthless and people shouldnt go... i was just saying that if someone doesnt get prenatal care, it doesnt mean there is going to be something wrong with their baby. society has scared us in to thinking EVERYTHING is bad for us or EVERYONE is out to get us.... or if we dont do THIS bad things will happen, or if we do THAT good things will happen--- and i think all of that is just non-sense. pregnant women can drink caffeine (its proven that caffeine only affects an unborn baby if youre drinking 8 cups of a caffeinated beverage for every single day of your pregnancy), its okay if they gain more than 4 lbs a month, a lot of stuff they say is bad for you during pregnancy really isnt that bad. its exaggerated to make us fear everything. i just hate hearing how people think that if they dont get prenatal care that their baby is going to die or something. its just ridiculous to me, you know? i hate how society has turned us all in to a bunch of whiney cry babies that fear walking outside their front door... =/

Sometimes, having an over the counter prenatal can be dangerous. My doctor just told me that I should switch to a perscriptioned prenatal vitamin because some over the counters have too much of a certain vitamin or not enough of one, and it can cause things to form wrong. So Chrisseeg can stick to her beliefs, because even prenatals themselves can cause problems.
