I'm in Week 32 of pregnancy and this weekend I passed a large blood clot (small apple sized!). The bleeding stopped after the clot was passed. At my 33 week GYN appointment, the baby and pregnancy looked fine however the doctor did not know what could have caused this. Do you have any ideas on what caused this and how to prevent this for the rest of my pregnancy?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
The blood clot could have been the mucus plug from cervical canal, or a result slight bleeding after intercourse (if you had one before this incident). Avoid having rough intercourse, lifting heavy things, doing heavy work or physical activity. Report development of any abnormal symptoms immediately to your obstetrician.
Take care.

My sis is experiencing the same @ 33 wks pregnant. Passed a blood clot, in preterm labor, hosp staff is giving meds to stop labor & steriods to develop babies lungs. What happened with your delivery & baby etc?
Just curious as I post she is back @ hospital for 2nd time has been in labor 4 days. Wondering what the clot maybe? They say not the mucus plug nor placenta? Baby is about 5 lbs she is due Sept 21st.

blood clots in 3rd trimester
My wife had also a blood clot this morning. She is 32 weeks. Took her to hospital and had her checked. Doctor could not give a solid explanation. He said it may habe been part of placenta that came out. He said not to worry as long as you have no sex or heavy activity. Modified best rest is all he prescribed. Ultrasound revealed no placenta previa or detachments. Any opinions anyone?

Still no explanation on why my sis passed this clot but it was not part of the placenta nor was is the mucus plug when this happened @ 32 or almost 33 wks.
But since then she started with contraction after contraction so she was put on bed rest (sister is 44 yrs of age) plus meds to alleviate the pain & lessen contractions.
So, now we are in/out of hospital for two wks hoping & praying for the best since this is so strange & then she looses mucus plug a few days ago.
Well, my sis gave birth emergency c-section @ 34 wks last night. Everyone is doing well. Even though she was on these meds to stop her from contracting she continued to dialate & baby was ready & weighed in at 6 lbs, 7 wks early. A true miracle. I would just make sure you keep good notes & call or visit doc if anything changes.
