Hello,

I was diagnosed with GERD and I have been taking Nexium for over 5 years. I really want to get off of it as I do not think it was meant to be a permanent medication. Every time I try to ween myself off of it, I immediately feel excruciating acid pain the same day. It does not matter what I eat of drink, it hurt no matter what. I am only 23 years old and I feel I am too young to have chronic acid pain like I do. Over the counter acid relief like (pepcid, etc) do not help at all when I take them. I really want to be able to stop taking nexium. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks :)

Acid Reflux Answer A29315
Hi,

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out. Your concern is regarding the recurrent acidity.

All these symptoms are of gastritis due to acid reflux from the stomach. It is usually after eating a heavy fatty meal and sedentary lifestyle.

It can also be caused by drinking too much alcohol, prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or infection with bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

Eat small nutritious meals at frequent intervals instead of a heavy single meal. Exercise frequently and take your dinner atleast 2 hrs prior to bedtime.

Your symptoms may be due to H.Pylori infection. You need antibiotics in that case after prescription from a physician.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
