Q: Want an echocardiogram

Hi. I recently had chest discomfort, left arm and shoulder pain, etc. I went to the heart doc. He did an EKG, and a stress test. Everything normal. I didn't think of it at the time, but I now want to get an echocardiogram. I know some doctors are turned off when a patient dictates proper procedure and tests. But I really want this just at the very least to ease my mind.

I did have an echo 6 months back due to dizziness and it showed minor mitral valve prolapse. So now I'm thinking that I have to convince this doc becasue he just did an echo 6 months back. But now this time I have light headed ness, chest pain, and left arm discomfort, jaw pain, etc.

What is a good way to approach this? What phrases or words can be used to get an echo? What if he says no? I have a follow up visit coming up soon. Thanks.

I would think if you told him that you had additional symptoms this time, that might be enough to convince him to do the echo. An echocardiogram can detect problems that an EKG and stress test cannot. Since your symptoms include signs of a heart attack, I hope your doctor would feel the echo necessary.

Good luck with it.
