Q: Walking after foot injury
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 16th, 2009
On March 13, my doctor told me that I could start full weight bearing on my injured foot. He said it takes about a week to get going and be guided by pain. Up until this point I have been in a cast and the boot (5 weeks total) with only toe touch weight bearing allowed. My question is: What should I use to support myself during the transition, two crutches, one crutch, a cane? I have ben using a walker for the past five weeks. Thank you.

Since your doctor already told you that you can put full weight on the injured leg, you might want to take a cane and use it more or less to support you, depending on the intensity of the pain. You might want to avoid too much putting weight, because the tissue surrounding the bone might suffer enough to get inflamed and to hurt. Just give yourself enough time to get through the healing and be patient.
